Dallas pest control

We are Texas's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Dallas raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Dallas pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
  • If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
  • Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
  • When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation

Dallas Raccoon Control Tip: Will Every Raccoon You See Be A Rabies Carrier?
One of the biggest disease concerns that is associated with raccoons is rabies, and it is true that there is a portion of the raccoon population in the United States does actually carry this dangerous disease. This is particularly of concern for people as although medical advances of the treatment have progressed during the twentieth and twenty first centuries, it is still a condition that proves fatal to people in some cases. However, the idea that every raccoon carries rabies is simply incorrect, and in fact the majority of raccoons that people are likely to see are likely to be free of rabies.

The Proportion Of Raccoons That Carry Rabies
When it comes to the numbers of animals that are tested for rabies each year, around 29.4% of animals tested that return positive results for rabies are raccoons. However, this is only a small proportion of the overall raccoon population, and animals that get tested for rabies will often show other symptoms which make them more likely to be rabies carriers. Estimates vary in terms of the overall prevalence of rabies in the raccoon population, but estimates based on CDC data suggest that around 13% of raccoons actually tested for the disease are positive results, which means that in most cases any raccoons you see aren't likely to be rabid.

How Is Rabies Transmitted?
Rabies is a condition that is very serious if it is contracted, but actually usually requires direct contact in order to contract the disease, and this is usually done through the saliva of the infected animal. Because of the nature of the way that rabies operates within the host animal, one of the symptoms is to make the animal more aggressive, as rabies is generally present in the saliva, with a bite from the infected animal being the most common way to contract the disease. If infected saliva also comes into contact with an open would, rabies could also be transmitted in this way, but a bite is by far the most common way of catching rabies.

Signs That A Raccoon May Be Carrying Rabies
Aggression or unusual behavior is one of the key indicators that a raccoon may be rabid, as the disease actually causes a swelling in the brain that has an impact on the behavior of the animal. Another key sign to look for is that the raccoon may have a buildup of white or light colored foam around the mouth, which is probably the most distinctive sign that can be spotted without getting too close to the animal. Another of the main symptoms of rabies is a serious aversion to water, and this can include swerving to get away from puddles or watercourses, which is unusual for raccoons as they generally prefer to douse their food in water before eating.

What To Do If You See A Raccoon That May Be Rabid
The key thing to remember if you do encounter a raccoon that may be rabid is that it can be a serious threat to health, and especially in an urban area this does need to be dealt with promptly. You should always call your local animal services department and report that you have seen the raccoon, and it is also worth explaining the symptoms you have identified that make you think that the particular animal may be rabid. They will then arrange for the appropriately trained staff to come out and visit the area, so that they can catch and remove the problem raccoon, and they will also usually test the animal to ensure it was a rabies carrier.
